Consultant Sylvester Turner Dies After Attending Trump’s Handle

The Home of Representatives is in mourning.

Rep. Sylvester Turner—a first-term democrat elected to signify Texas in November—died after struggling a medical emergency following President Donald Trump’s March Four handle to Congress, NBC Information confirmed, citing two fellow Home democrats. He was 70.

Turner, who was the mayor of Houston from 2016 till 2024, had attended the president’s speech and posted a video to X (previously Twitter) 30 minutes earlier than the handle round 8:30pm ET introducing his visitor for the occasion, Angela Hernandez, who was advocating for her sick daughter.

“My message to the present administration for tonight’s State of the Union: ‘Do not mess with Medicaid,'” he wrote March 4. “Let me be clear: any cuts to Medicaid are a direct assault on households like Angela’s.”

Home Minority Whip Katherine Clark, D-Mass., shared the information of Turner’s passing along with his colleagues throughout a closed-door assembly March , NBC Information reported, citing a consultant who had attended the assembly.
